Greetings, our friends!
Rains arrived in the Piedmont in force this weekend and under the precipitous fog rising sharply over the James River valley, the heavy dew caking gems and sparkling diamonds under the late-morning sun, and the birdsong of two house sparrows feeding their young just outside my window with maggots and mealworms, I write to you with SOME BIG AND EXCITING NEWS!
As of TODAY ... right now ... this VERY moment … my new book is out! It is called, Stagtine: Kincentric Rewilding, Science, & A Tale of Letting Go.
But don’t go and buy the book. Not yet…
As many of you know, we have steadily worked these months, writing a Trilogy on what we call "kincentric rewilding," titled The Wildland Chronicles. We organized a network of brilliant and kind minds to participate in the writing process, during the writing process, and for the writing process, so that, in the end, we could share a trilogy of books that was made by kinship, for kinship, and about kinship.
Our dear friend, Fred Provenza, the award-winning author of Nourishment, was in this circle and his support, as a kind soul and great scientist, was and is a dear blessing! Plus, he wrote one heck of a Foreword for the book!
Kincentric rewilding is not a system that captures the essence of the wild or establishes "the wild" as a peculiar arrangement of nature with high exclusion fences that restrict life and its humans from entering: it is not a system at all. Kincentric rewilding is NOT about regeneration or regenerative agriculture (or rewilding for that matter), as they are understood in the popular consciousness today. It is not about saving the world, eradicating the climate crisis, or building soil organic matter or controlling biodiversity. It is not about control or doing more.
It is about being human, the mammal, and not human, the industrial capitalist and savior of the world. It is the kinship and concentricity (a cycle with limits) of all life, rotating around the unfixed axis of Earth. A life lived as Earthlings and not a life controlled as colonists or industrialists.
But is it a good book? I personally enjoyed writing it. That is true. But let’s take Hilda Labrada Gore of the Wise Traditions Podcast and the Weston A Price Foundation as some help. Hilda writes, “This book will catch you off guard and throw you off kilter...in the best of ways. If you think you understand regenerative agriculture, think again. Daniel's experience and writing challenges all pre-conceived notions and helps us rethink our relationship to nature around us and the earth beneath our feet. Thanks, Daniel!”
